BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo women's basketball returns to action Wednesday evening, hosting the St. Francis (PA) Red Flash at 7 pm. It will be the team's first and only home game in the month of December, and it looks to run its win streak to three games.
UB is coming in confident after a tough road win over ACC opponent Pittsburgh on Sunday. The team raced out to a 10-0 lead in the game, and held off the Panthers for a 66-62 win. Five different players reached double figures in scoring, with Sloane Walton leading the team with 13 points. Christa Baccas pulled down 14 rebounds and Cherridy Thornton scored a season-high 11 points off the bench. It was the first win since 2000, when Buffalo beat North Carolina at home.
The Red Flash have an offense to match its nickname, as the team has averaged almost 80 points per game in the first five games of the 2013-14 season. Its main issue has been defense, particularly on the interior, as opponents are scoring 95 points per game and are shooting over 50 percent on two-point field goal attempts. Alli Williams leads the team with 23 points per game and averages 9.2 rebounds per game as well, with a 40 point and 30 point game already under her belt through five games. The team's strength has been creating extra shots on offense, averaging over 20 offensive rebounds per game that has led to 52 shots more than the opposition for the season in total.
St. Francis finished last season with a 17-16 overall record and 10-8 in conference play, good for fourth overall. The Red Flash has been picked 4th in the coaches poll this season, and Williams was one of just five players honored in the preseason as All-Conference performers, after averaging a double-double per game (17 points, 10.7 rebounds) and 3.6 steals per game as a junior.
Tonight's game will be the fourth meeting all-time between the two programs, but the first game in almost 20 years. The last meeting was December 10, 1994, with the Bulls winning 80-65. The Bulls have won all three games, by an average of over 11 points per game.
Tickets are still available by calling 1-877-UB-THERE. Doug Page will call the game on 1270 AM "The Fan" and a live video stream will be available for those who cannot make it to the game.
