BUFFALO, NY – Senior middle blocker Carissa McKenna has been named the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. The weekly honor is the first this season for McKenna and the third straight week that a UB player has won defensive honors.
McKenna left one of her best defensive matches for the final Mid-American Conference weekend of her career. In a five-set win over Bowling Green, McKenna recorded a career-high 11 blocks, pacing UB's 20.0-block night in a win over the defending MAC Champions. McKenna had five solo blocks in the match, the most by a UB player in one match since 2005. One night earlier, McKenna helped lead the Bulls to a 3-0 shutout over Miami as she had five kills in eight attempts. For the year, McKenna leads the Bulls in blocking and she is currently eighth in school history in career blocks.
"This is an outstanding honor for Carissa and it is only fitting that it came after her senior weekend," said head coach Todd Kress. "These seniors have worked so hard to build this program and change the culture here at Buffalo and it is nice that they are being recognized for their efforts."
For UB, this is the fifth time that a player has been named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week.
