ITHACA, NY - The host Cornell Big Red used a 24-3 run over the first 10 minutes of action on Saturday afternoon and never looked back defeating the University at Buffalo women's basketball team 70-43 at Newman Arena in the final non-conference game for UB .
The Bulls struggled in both possessing and shooting the ball, turning it over 21 times, while shooting just 23.2 percent for the game. The Bulls scored the first bucket of the contest, but then went over nine minutes without a field goal before redshirt junior Cherridy Thornton scored four straight points. However, for every Buffalo bucket Cornell had an answer on the other end, taking a 38-15 lead into the break.
The second half saw the two teams play nearly even as the Bulls were outscored by just four over the final 20 minutes of competition. Redshirt sophomore Kristen Sharkey scored nine of her team-high 13 points after the break, mostly coming from the free throw line. The Bulls never pulled closer than 21 in the second half.
Eight different players recorded points for the Bulls, but Sharkey was the only player to reach double figures. She just missed a double-double, adding nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Thornton had nine points and three rebounds off the bench, while Margeaux Gupilan and Karin Moss each finished with five points. Moss also added three assists and four steals in 14 minutes of action.
Cornell had three players in double figures led by 15 points from Clare Fitzpatrick. Allyson DiMagno added 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
The Bulls will begin Mid-American Conference play at home on Thursday night when they host Northern Illinois at 7:00 pm.
