AKRON, OH - The host Akron Zips scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 victory over the University at Buffalo softball team on Sunday. The game ended the season for the Bulls, who finished with a 14-31 record and a 4-17 mark in the MAC.
UB got on the board in the top of the first as freshman Alexis Curtiss belted a two-run homer to left field, scoring fellow freshman Karly Nevez. For Curtiss, it was her team-leading fifth home run of the year and 26th run batted in. The Zips scored one in the bottom half of the inning and then neither team scored over the next four innings.
The Zips used a couple Buffalo errors in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead and then hit a two-run home run to go up 5-1. UB was able to load the bases in the top of the seventh, but was unable to score.
Speckman picked up the loss as she went the complete game allowing eight hits, but just one earned run. She walked three and struck out two. Curtiss went 3-for-4 as she finished the season hitting .379, the third highest in school history and the best ever in a season by a freshman. She hit her 15th double of the season in the seventh inning, which is second in a single season in school history.
Junior Alyssa Ward went 2-for-3 in the game, while Nevez went 1-for-3.
Offensively, the Bulls finished with one of their best seasons in their Division I history. They batted .265 on the year, more than 20 points higher than their previous best. They hit 28 home runs on the season, seven more than their previous high. The Bulls also finished second in runs scored and runs batted in and finished tied for first in doubles. Defensively, their 43 errors were the second fewest in a season and their .965 fielding percentage is tied for third.
Today's game was the final college game for UB's three seniors Holly Johnson, Haylee Land and Kristin Waldron. Waldron finished her career second in school history in hits and is UB's all-time career leader in triples.
Buffalo welcomes back 13 players in 2012-13.
