BUFFALO, NY – For the second straight week a University at Buffalo softball player has been honored by the Mid-American Conference as junior Alyssa Ward has been named MAC East Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning. The honor is the first in Ward's career.
Ward had arguably one of the best weeks in school history as the Bulls went 4-1 last week, all on the road. Ward batted .625 (10-for-16), hitting the first cycle in UB's D-I history in a win over Canisius on Wednesday. Ward went 4-for-5 from the plate against the Golden Griffins, driving in a career-high six runs in the process. She continued that dominance into the conference weekend as she batted .667 in UB's doubleheader sweep at Northern Illinois. Ward had doubles in both games of the doubleheader and added her second triple of the week in game two. With her strong week, Ward has moved her average up to .326 on the season and is now tied for the team leading home runs. Her RBI total, hits and doubles totals are all second.
Ward joins freshman Alexis Curtiss, who was named MAC East Player of the Week last Tuesday.
Ward and the Bulls are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they begin a nine-game homestand with a doubleheader against Niagara. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
