WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team ran into the MAC's top team on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-1 to Miami (OH). The win for the RedHawks was their 27th straight against league opponents in the regular season. UB falls to 5-7 overall and evens its MAC record at 1-1.
The RedHawks swept through the three matches in doubles, although both matches at one and two were extremely close with Miami winning, 8-6 and 8-5, respectively.
In singles action, Miami picked up the first three wins to clinch the match before Buffalo got on board with a victory at second singles. Sophomore Marta Stoyanova won a tight first set 7-5 over Riekie Honiball before she dominated the second, 6-1, for the straight sets victory. Junior Tamara Markovic lost a tough match at third singles, despite coming back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set. She came back to win it 6-4, but fell 6-4 in the second and 10-6 in the super tiebreaker.
"Miami is one of the top teams in the league and I thought they just executed better than we did today.," said head coach Kathy Twist. "We were a little heistant out there and we need to get mentally tougher in these types of matches against the better teams in our leage."
The Bulls will hit the road next weekend for their first two MAC road matches beginning on Friday at Bowling Green.
