Bulls Down Penn For First Dual Victory

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team picked up its first dual victory of the spring on Saturday, defeating the University of Pennsylvania, 5-2. UB swept the three doubles matches and won four of the six matches in singles. The victory was Buffalo's first over a team from the Ivy League since the 2009-10 season.
The two teams actually started with singles play as the Quakers won the first two matches at second and fourth singles. However, UB got on board with a victory at first singles as Tanvi Shah defeated Stephanie Do, 7-5, 6-0. Sophomore Miranda Podlas than tied things up with a victory at fifth singles as she defeated Jules Rodin, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Fellow sophomore Anamaria Candanoza then picked up a victory at sixth singles as she overcame a 5-0 deficit in the first set to defeat Emma Whitfield, 7-5, 6-0. Junior Tamara Markovic clinched the match for the Bulls at third singles as she defeated Daniela DePaoli, 7-5, 6-2.
Having already taken the match, UB came out firing in doubles winning first at second doubles after Penn was forced to retire. The Bulls then won at first doubles as Shah and Podlas won their match, 8-6. The Bulls also picked up an 8-6 win at third doubles.
"The things that we worked on like better footwork and mentally staying in every point were evident out on the court today," said head coach Kathy Twist. "Things just started to click for us and we played the big points extremely tough. I was really impressed with the play of Anamaria Candanoza and Tammi Markovic, who really fought out on the court to pull out victories."
The Bulls remain in the Philadelphia area tomorrow when they face Temple at 8:30 am.
