BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo softball team has signed two players for 2013-14 signing Ashton Earnhardt (Owasso, OK) and Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, NY) to National Letters of Intent.
Though Earnhardt did not attend a high school that had a softball team, she had a solid career for her travel teams. She currently plays for Team Oklahoma, but played the last two years with the Tulsa Eagles Gold. With Tulsa, she batted .491, and as a sophomore in high school she was chosen to play on the USA All-American team with Triple Crown Sports in New York City.
Currently attending Rejoice Christian High School, she has been a starter on the varsity basketball team for the past three years and she is also a member of the golf team.
"Ashton will add a lot of speed to our lineup," said head coach Jen Teague. "Her travel experience has afforded her to play against some of the highest levels of contribution and she will come in and provide depth in the outfield, while she fights for a starting role."
Mascari is another utility player who could fill roles all over the infield, but early on will see the majority of time as a designated player. A varsity starter for four years, she has been a two-time All-New York State team member and a three-time All-CNY first team member as a player for Westhill High School. She hit a school-record 14 home runs over the first three seasons in high school, batting .557 over that span as well. She also owns the school record for most home runs (with four) and runs batted in (10) in a single game.
"It is great to get local talent, especially someone who is as good at the plate as Kelly," said Teague. "I am excited to see how her state from high school will translate to the college game. We are going to start her off as a DP and see where she fits in the field."
