BUFFALO, NY – First-year head coach Felisha Legette-Jack has announced the signing of three players for the 2013-14 season, her first recruiting class at Buffalo. Included in the class are a player from Brooklyn, NY and two players from Mississippi.
"These are three special student-athletes that will help us build the foundation here at Buffalo," said Legette-Jack. "They have had great success both in the classroom and on the court and we are extremely fortunate to have them join us."
Alexus Malone (Oxford, MS)
Malone is an extremely talented player that is averaging 26.0 points and 11.0 rebounds through the first four games of her senior season at Oxford High School. Malone averaged 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last season as her school went a perfect 17-0 and won the Mississippi State Championship.
Recently, Malone was selected as a Dandy Dozen, a list comprised by the Clarion Ledger of the top 12 players in the state of Mississippi.
"Alexus is a presence in the paint and brings great intensity each time she steps on the court," said Legette-Jack. "She is extremely aggressive on defense and knows how to finish around the basket."
Camera Miley (Brooklyn, NY)
Miley plays both guard positions for the Midwood Hornets in Brooklyn, NY. Miley is averaging 14.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game and she ranks third in scoring in the AA Division. During a summer league game in 2009, Miley scored 52 points in one game.
Off the court, Miley has performed over 1,000 hours of community service with the Girl Scouts, The Rose Classic Girls' Basketball program and The Claver Youth Program.
"Camera has great speed and athleticism and moves well both with the ball and without," said Legette-Jack. "Her energy and enthusiasm for the game will set the tone in the backcourt early and often."
Joanna Smith (Southaven, MS)
Smith plays at Southaven High School where she is currently averaging 12.3 points per game. Last season, her team was ranked 7th in all of Mississippi and she was selected to play in the North vs. South All-Star game, which was put on by the Mississippi Association of Coaches. Smith averaged 12.7 points per game and 2.0 steals per contest during her junior year.
The Mississippi High School Athletic Association currently ranks Smith's Southaven team first in 6A in the state of Mississippi.
"Joanna is a very versatile guard that is explosive on the offensive and defensive end," said Legette-Jack. "Joanna has been part of an extremely successful high school program at Southaven and she knows what it takes to win."
Legette-Jack also announced on Monday that redshirt junior Nytor Longar would miss the remainder of the 2012-13 season with a knee injury.
