MORGANTOWN, WV - Facing new member West Virginia for the first time as a Mid-American Conference opponent, the Buffalo Bulls allowed a pair of early second-half goals and lost 2-0 to the Mountaineers. The loss drops the team to 2-9-1 this season and 0-2 in the MAC, while West Virginia moves to 7-3-2 and 2-0 in conference play.
"The boys played very well today," head coach David Hesch said. "Maksym Kowal was a bright spot and we were all over them early, but a bad tackle puts him out for the rest of the half and most of the second half. Two errors led to two goals - if we are going to compete for a playoff spot we need to stop giving up easy goals."
Kowal took two shots in his limited action, and Steve Mounnarat also was able to attempt a pair of shots of his own, including the team's lone shot on frame in the 79th minute. In the match, the team was out-shot 23-8.
In the span of just over six minutes early in the second half, West Virginia would find all the offense it would need. In the 51st minute, Andy Bevin got deep into the box and took a turnaround shot from 10 yards out to open the scoring. Then in the 57th minute, a foul by the Bulls earned Risto Laetti a yellow card and earned the Mountaineers a penalty kick opportunity. Eric Schoenle would convert to put the host school up 2-0.
The Bulls have one more road match before opening MAC play at UB Stadium. Next up is a Saturday night match at Bowling Green at 7 pm.
