BUFFALO, NY - The Men's Track and Field team of UB made an impact in the Buffalo community by volunteering at the Buffalo Science Museum. This on-going project has members of the Men's Track and Field team assisting in activities dedicated to the new exhibit, "Science of Sports". Kevin Enck, Matt Killian, Ryan Billian, Miles Lewis and Jacques Garcia all helped in activities, including the high jump, 10-yard dash and other track related activities. They provided an interactive experience by giving pointers to guests, mainly children, in how they could improve their speed and increase their vertical jump.
The "Science of Sports" exhibit at the Buffalo Science Museum demonstrates the intricate relationship between sports and science in a fun and inviting environment for all ages. From the ice rink, to the football field, to the basketball court and all sports in between, scientific themes involving math, physics, and biology all play a role in the complex equation that makes sports fun and exciting. As a result, this exhibit provides a great learning opportunity to instill people of all ages an enthusiasm for sports and science.
"It was pretty cool to see kids jump higher and run faster after just a few pointers," said junior Kevin Enck. "It was also funny to watch the kid's jaws drop when they saw how high we could jump and how fast we could run. All of us left the museum thinking that it was very fun and rewarding to help out community in a way that was so directly related to our sport. This was by far the most fun and rewarding community service I've done here at UB. I can't wait to do it again!"
All student-athletes at UB are encouraged to explore their passions beyond the realm of sports through community service opportunities. Recent projects have aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle; providing mentorship through letter correspondence; assisting in meal preparation; and construction projects for a safer community. UB student athletes are driven in becoming involved within the Buffalo community. Ultimately, through their experiences, not only will the student-athletes meet incredible people of Buffalo but also discover their passion, similar to Kevin from the UB Men's Track and Field team.
