SMITHFIELD, RI – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season with a 5-2 win over Bryant on Sunday morning. The Bulls are 1-2 for the spring campaign splitting the weekend in Rhode Island.
The Bulls swept the doubles competition winning all three matches. At number one, Wojciech Starakiewicz and Vusa Hove defeated Juan Gonzalez-Paz and Ernesto Arguello, 8-6. Starakiewicz and Hove went undefeated in doubles over the weekend as they also scored a win at Brown on Saturday.
Also scoring doubles wins were George Tibil and Travis Zappia at number two with an 8-6 win and Alex Kalinin and Damien David at number three with an 8-1 victory.
The Bulls clinched the match by scoring victories in the top four singles matches. David knocked off Peter Hart Callahan, 6-1, 6-1 at number one. Starakiewicz defeated Zachary Morris, 6-4, 6-2 at number two. Hove beat Arguello, 6-3, 6-3 at number three. In the number four match, Tibil needed three sets to down Dana Parziale, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
"It feels good to be on the winning side of things again," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We obviously aren't in mid-season form yet and still have a lot to do. Bryant has improved immensely in the last three years and we are very proud to get out of here with the win."
The Bulls travel to Penn State on February 11 for their next action.
