DETROIT, MI – Senior Nate Woods scored the game-winning goal with 3:05 to play in the second overtime to give the University at Buffalo men's soccer team a 1-0 victory at Detroit on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls remain unbeaten in their first three matches of the 2011 campaign with a 2-0-1 mark with all three contests away from home.
With rain falling throughout the contest, Woods netted the game-winner following Maksym Kowal's attempt struck a defender and the ball went to Woods who connected on the goal hitting the top right corner of the net. The goal was Woods' second of the season and third of his career. Woods also scored in UB's season-opening triumph at St. Bonaventure on August 26.
Both squads played even throughout the contest as both the Bulls and Titans (2-1) took 14 shots and four corner kicks. UB goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi earned his second shutout of the season as he made four saves.
The Bulls played the final eight minutes of the match with a man advantage after Detroit's Sam Seppo was forced to leave the game after picking up a red card in the final minute of the first overtime.
UB interim head coach David Hesch was pleased with his team's success but having to play overtime in their last two matches there is room for improvement. "I think we're having a tough time in the final third of the game but we'll straighten that out in practice. We're doing the right things, we just need to do a better job. We did a great job rebounding and defending well today. We did everything right but could not get a quality shot on goal."
After their first three contests on the road, the Bulls open the home slate on Wednesday, September 7 against NJIT at 7:30 pm at UB Stadium.
"After these three on the road winning two and tying one its going to be good to play in front of home crowd," said Hesch.
