BUFFALO, NY – A late second half goal by senior Andy Tiedt was the only offense the University at Buffalo needed as the Bulls defeated NJIT, 1-0, in men's soccer action at UB Stadium on Wednesday night. UB remained unbeaten in 2011 with a 3-0-1 record and scored its fifth consecutive win in home openers.
Tiedt registered his second goal of the season with 7:07 left to play in the second half. Tiedt was able to control a high pass from Risto Latti 20 yards from the goal and after getting the ball to the ground fired a shot past NJIT goalkeeper Lars Maalen-Johansen. The goal tied Tiedt for the team lead with senior Nate Woods and gave Tiedt the team lead in points with five.
The Bulls clamped down on defense in the second half as UB allowed just one shot by the Highlanders (1-3-0) in the final 45 minutes. For the match, UB outshot NJIT, 15-8, and collected six corner kicks, all in the first half. UB goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi registered his third shutout of the season needing just two first half saves in the contest.
Interim head coach David Hesch was pleased with the way Tiedt was able to help the Bulls to the victory. "He's been struggling to find the net," said Hesch. "He's had a ton of shots. It was huge for him." Tiedt led the Bulls with four shots.
UB travels to the Capital District this weekend for matches at Siena and Albany. UB takes on the Saints on Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm. On Sunday, September 11, the Bulls take on the Great Danes at 2:30 pm.
