Bulls Fall Short At Miami, 3-1

OXFORD, OH - The University at Buffalo volleyball team hung tough on Friday night, but ultimately fell at Miami (OH), 3-1. The lost drops UB to 8-9 on the season and 1-2 in Mid-American Conference play.
The RedHawks took the contest 25-17, 19-25, 26-24, 25-23 despite the Bulls outhitting the RedHawks, .204 to .155. In fact, the Bulls had more kills, assists, blocks and digs in the affair, but it was 16 service errors that doomed UB.
The Bulls kept it close early in the first set, trailing by just 12-11 when Miami went on a 9-3 run, going up 21-14. Miami led by as many as eight in the first set, which was the final margin in the set.
UB would lead for almost the entire second set, going up by as many as seven at 19-12 to pull things even at one set a piece. Miami would come out of the break and open the third set on a 9-1 run, but a 9-2 Buffalo run pulled it within one. Miami moved back up by five, leading at 24-19, but the Bulls tried to make a set, scoring five straight points to tie things up at 24-24. However, the RedHawks recorded the final two points of the set to take a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set belonged to the Bulls early as UB scored the first five points, forcing Miami to call a timeout. The RedHawks would go on to tie the set up a 9-9, but UB again pulled ahead at 14-11. The RedHawks responded with three straight points and then neither team led by more than a point as things remained tied at 23-23. However, the RedHawks would use a Buffalo service error and a kill to take the set and the match.
The Bulls were led by a career-high 18 kills from senior Abby Niekamp and 14 kills from sophomore Dana Musil. Freshman Liz Scott added nine kills, while Alessandra Jovy-Heuser and Carissa McKenna each added seven kills. Sophomore setter Dani Reinert finished with two kills and a match-high 44 assists. Reinert also recorded two of UB's five service aces.
Defensively, the Bulls were led by sophomore Kelly Svoboda, who had 23 digs, tying her for match-high honors. Musil completed the double-double with 11 digs. Scott added seven, while Reinert and Jovy-Heuser each had six. As a team, the Bulls had 11 total blocks, led by six from Jovy-Heuser, who had two solos. McKenna had four total blocks, while Niekamp and Reinert each had three.
The Bulls remain on the road tomorrow as they face Bowling Green at 3:00 pm. The Falcons are currently 15-1 on the season.
