OXFORD, OH - Due to poor weather forecast for the weekend, the Buffalo Bulls (12-35, 2-20 MAC) played an afternoon doubleheader against Miami (OH) (30-21, 16-7 MAC) Friday at McKie Field, dropping game one 4-2 in ten innings and 5-2 in game two.
Starter Josh Edwards had another terrific start, throwing nine innings for the second time in his past three starts. After allowing a run in the second inning, Edwards shut down the Redhawk offense, not allowing another run until the eighth inning. The Buffalo offense picked him up with two runs in the top of the fourth thanks to a solo home run by Tom Murphy and a RBI single from Jordan Camp that scored Eric Bryce, who reached on a two-out double.
Both pitchers employed the bend-but-not-break mentality, as the two teams combined for 23 total hits but the score was knotted at 2-2 going into extra innings as Edwards finished his outing with a commanding 1-2-3 inning in the ninth. In the tenth inning, Miami got a walk-off home run with one out to get the win.
In game two, the Redhawks wasted no time jumping out to the early lead, scoring four runs in the first four innings while the UB offense struggled. The Bulls struck out 13 times in the second game and was unable to find a rhythm until the later innings.
Down 5-0 in the eighth, when Bryce split the left center gap for a double and then advancing to third on an error by the center fielder. He was driven in on a suicide squeeze by Jason Kanzler to help the Bulls get on the board. In the ninth, the team made its comback attempt, putting runners on first and second with one out. Michael Burke hit a RBI single to center field, but the game ended on a strikeout with two men on.
Game two starter Kevin Crumb was tagged for all five runs for the loss, but pitched seven innings with four strikeouts and one walk. The two teams will try to beat out the weather with a noon game tomorrow to wrap up the weekend series.
