OXFORD, OH - The Buffalo Bulls baseball team was able to take an early lead but was unable to hold off the host Redhawks, getting swept in the weekend series with an 8-2 loss Saturday afternoon at McKie Field to Miami (OH).
Trailing 1-0 heading to the fifth inning, the offense was able to take advantage of a Redhawk defensive miscue to take the lead. Eric Bryce led off with a double to right center off a 3-2 pitch, and scored after the shortstop overthrew first base on a hit by Andrew Smietana, moving him to second and Bryce home for the tying run. Matt Pollock soon followed with an opposite-field RBI single that gave the team its lone lead of the day, 2-1, and capped the scoring for UB.
Miami retook the lead in the bottom half of the fifth, and added four more runs in the seventh off Buffalo starter Cameron Copping that iced the game.
With his team-leading two hits on Saturday, Tom Murphy capped a strong week in which he recorded 10 hits, the second straight week with double-digit hits. He also extended his hit streak to 13 games, the longest streak of any UB player this season. Over the three-game weekend series, he had two or more hits in each game.
With the loss, the Bulls fall to 12-36, 2-21 in the Mid American Conference. The team will return home for the final five games of the season, starting on Tuesday with a makeup doubleheader against Canisius. The Bulls hope to clinch a winning record in its Big Four rivalry as it currently has a combined record of 4-3 against Canisius, Niagara and St. Bonaventure this season. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 2 pm.
