Bulls Come From Behind to Take Game One, Split Doubleheader

BUFFALO, NY - Mired early by defensive miscues and poor weather, the Buffalo baseball team dug an early hole in the first of two seven-inning games Tuesday afternoon against Canisius. A late rally salvaged a game one win, 5-4, while the Golden Griffins took game two 8-2. With the series moved to Demske Sports Complex due to the rain, the Bulls were the home team for both games.

After falling behind 4-0 after two innings, the Bulls began its earnest comeback with a run in the bottom of the second. Alex Baldock was hit by a pitch to start things off, and after moving to third thanks to a groundout and wild pitch, Eric Bryce came through to plate him with a two-out single right back up the middle. That would be the the final runs scored for either side until Buffalo's comeback in the sixth.

Buffalo put the first two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth with an Andrew Smietana walk and Jordan Camp single, and Tom Murphy was able to drive in a run on a groundout. A single by Baldock put him on first and Camp on third, and a two-out walk to Bryce loaded up the bases. A walk to River McWilliams moved the runners around and brought the score to 4-3, Canisius, with the bases still loaded with two outs. Daniel Scahill was the hero, hitting the first pitch he saw up the middle to drive in the game-winning run.

Daniel Ginader earned his first career win thanks to a gutsy effort as the starter, fighting through the early hiccups to throw six innings with only one earned run and three strikeouts. McWilliams came in to relieve him in the top of the seventh and earned the team's first save of the season.

In game two, the weather worsened, with on-and-off rain showers moving through the area. Starting pitcher Michael Burke lasted two innings, giving way to four different relievers. The Griffs again had another 4-0 lead before the offense was able to plate its first run for UB. In the bottom of the fourth, Scahill hit a single to right and was followed by a walk to Michael Scarcello and a single by Jamie Jiron. Smietana pulled a single to left to score Scahill and move the score to 4-1. The team would not score again until the seventh inning, when Smietana was driven in on a fielder's choice from Camp.

With the split, Buffalo moves to 13-37 and Canisius now sits at 23-29. The Bulls will take a day off before a three-game series against Bowling Green to close out the season. First pitch on Thursday will be 3 pm, weather permitting.
