ATHENS, GA - The University at Buffalo softball team was locked in another pitchers' duel on Sunday morning, falling to North Dakota State, 2-0, at the Georgia Softball Classic. The Bulls conclude the second weekend of play with a 2-8 overall record.
The Bison were able to score a two-out run in the bottom of the first inning, taking a lead they would never give up. They added a second run in the bottom of the third on a home run.
The Bulls managed just four hits in the game, but it looked like they would be able to generate some offense early on. Freshman Holly Luciano led the game off with a single and immediately stole second, ultimately advancing to third with two outs, but that is where she would remain as the inning came to an end.
UB again put runners on base in the second inning as freshman Sammi Gallardo singled to center field, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Alyssa Ward got on base as she was hit by a pitch, but again neither runner was able to move any further.
The Bulls also picked up hit in the third, but then did not get another runner on base until the top of the seventh when sophomore Jessica Griffin led the inning off with a single only to be stranded their to end the game.
Freshman Tori Speckman pitched the complete game, picking up the loss. She struck out one batter and is now 1-3 on the season.
The Bulls will have a weekend off before returning to play on Saturday, March 5 at the Marshall Tournament.
