DES MOINES, IA - The University at Buffalo track and field program made a splash at last weekend's USATF Junior and Senior National Championships as six Bulls competed with two earning top 10 finishes. The event was held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, IA.
The UB throwers again came out strong led by freshman Rachel Roberts who finished second in the shot put at the Junior National Championships with a throw of 49-05.75 (15.08m), which was a new personal best for her. With her second place finish, Roberts has advanced to the IAAF World Junior Championships being held in Winnipeg, Canada from July 19-25, where she will represent the United States as one of four throwers in the shot put.
Fresh off of her All-American performance in the shot put at the NCAA Championships, Kristy Woods finished in ninth place in the shot put in the Senior National Championships. Woods threw 54-04.75 (16.58m), missing the final round by one one-hundreth of a meter.
Also competing for the Bulls were some of their top freshmen from a year ago. School record holder Jamiee McClary competed in the 200m and placed 18th, running in a fierce headwind.Brooklyn Ventura placed 20th in the 100m high hurdles, while Leah Wightman placed 18th in the 800m. Also competing for UB was freshmen Katie Sanders, who ran in the 5000m.
"I can't say enough about our student-athletes at this meet," said head coach Vicki Mitchell. "The exposure to the highest level of competition, the opportunity to watch and meet Olympic gold medalists and the chance to prepare for the next level of competition is something that can not be replicated."
