Bulls Fall To Western Michigan In MAC Championship Match

MUNCIE, IN – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team, playing in its first Mid-American Conference Championship in school history fell to Western Michigan, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center on the campus of Ball State University. The Bulls conclude the 2010 season with a 13-7 overall record and finished as the league's regular season champion.
The top-seeded Bulls fell behind early as Western Michigan, seeded third, captured the opening doubles point with decisions in the number one and three matches. UB's number one duo of Kirill Kolomyts andMarcelo Mazzetto was defeated, 8-1, by the brother combination of Thomas and Michael Calderone. UB's third team of Vusa Hove andMitch Zenatty lost to Pablo Oliverez and Casey Cullen, 8-4.
In singles play, the Bulls picked up a first-set win from Kolomyts in the number three match as the Broncos claimed first-set victories in the other five contests. Western Michigan then closed out the match as three matches concluded in straight sets. With the Broncos holding a 4-0 edge, play was abandoned on the final three courts.
In the three matches that had not been decided when play was stopped, the Bulls had split the first two sets in two of the matches with the third about to reach the conclusion of the second set and head to a third set.
Two Bulls were named to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of the match. Sophomores Alex Kalinin and Wojciech Starakiewicz earned recognition from the conference for their play over the weekend. Kalinin, UB's number six singles player, scored a straight-sets win against Toledo on Friday and was close to tying his Saturday match with Zeyad Montasser when play was stopped. Both of Starakiewicz's number one singles matches were halted prior to conclusion. Three of his four sets that he completed over the weekend went to tiebreakers.
"Today Western Michigan showed us why they're a five-time champion," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "They outplayed us and they came with their A game and it just took us a little too long to get up to par and they showed us why they're champions. We've learned a lot from that match."
