Bulls Edged By Akron

AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of close games to Akron this afternoon, slipping 1-0 in game one, and falling in extra innings 8-7 in the nightcap. Freshman Ashley Bertot went a perfect three for three in stolen bases and now ranks second on UB's single season record list.

The first inning of game one made all the difference, as Akron put up one run which would be the only run scored. The Bulls had their chances, collecting three hits throughout the game. Bertot started off the game with a single and stole second and third to round the bases, but was unable to score. Bertot went a perfect three for three in stolen bases on the day, and 17 for the season, which puts her one shy of a single season record. Kristin Waldron and Jessica Griffin also had hits for Buffalo, but a solid Akron defense prevented the Bulls from scoring.
Sharon Barr pitched the complete game for Buffalo, holding the Zips to four hits and one run, while striking out two batters.

Game two ended in dramatic fashion, as the teams took 10 innings to decide a winner. The Bulls and Zips went back and forth, with Akron scoring first, putting up three runs in the bottom of the second inning. But the Bulls countered, scoring three of their own in the top of the fourth and adding to the count with three more in the top of the sixth.Alex Bejarano doubled to send home the first run, with Candice Sheehan and Kristen Gallipani collecting the other RBIs in the fourth. Two of the three Buffalo runs in the sixth were unearned as the Bulls capitalized on a pair of Akron errors to take the 6-3 lead. However, the bottom of the seventh took a turn in Akron's direction as they scored three runs to tie the game. Neither team would score in the eighth or ninth innings. WithLindsay Hampton placed on second and Alyssa Ward reaching on an error, Bejarano singled to earn her second RBI of the game, to temporarily give the Bulls the lead. The Zips went on to score two runs in the bottom of the tenth to ultimately seal their second win of the day.
Barr and Terese Diaz split time on the mound in game two, combining for nine strikeouts in ten innings.
The Bulls continue their road trip as they play single games on Saturday and Sunday at Ohio. Action starts tomorrow at 2:00 pm in Athens, Ohio.
