Garbaty and O'Brien Named MAC Top Performers

BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo throwers Casey Garbaty and Becky O'Brien were named the Mid-American Conference's outdoor field athletes of the week. The league announced the weekly awards from its Cleveland headquarters late Wednesday.

Garbaty won the men's javelin at the Raleigh Relays with a school-record heave of 224-6 (68.43m), shattering his mark from last season of 209-9 (63.93m). Garbaty's throw was more than 10 feet better than the second-place throw and was also 20 feet better than his previous season high set at the Seahawk Invitational on March 13. He is currently 27th nationally in the javelin in the first report of the outdoor season released by the USTFCCCA this week. This week's listings are based on performances of last season and this season. His throw is the seventh best for 2010.

O'Brien smashed the women's discus record with her victory at the Raleigh Relays. O'Brien turned in a throw of 166-3 (50.67m) to break Sarah Vance's 2007 record by more than five feet and take the competition by more than 11 feet. The throw stands seventh nationally in the 2010 outdoor season and O'Brien is 23rd in the country based on 2009 and 2010 performances. O'Brien also finished second in the shot put at the North Carolina State meet with a personal best toss of 51-1.75 (15.59m), which ties her for 11th in the nation this season.

The Bulls travel to the Florida Relays this weekend.
