Kourtney Brown Breaks Single-Season Rebounding Record As Bulls Fall To Kent State

BUFFALO, NY – Junior Kourtney Brown became UB's single-season rebounding leader on Tuesday night as the Bulls wrapped up the regular season with a 67-55 loss to Kent State at Alumni Arena. Prior to the contest, UB recognized Dayna Smith who played her final home game in a UB uniform.

The Golden Flashes got off to a quick 4-0 start to the game, but both teams exchanged the lead back and forth for much of the first half. With Kent State holding a 16-15 lead, the Bulls went on a 5-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at four on a layup from Brown with 7:05 left in the half. Kent State would tie the game at 24-24 with 2:17 left in the half, but a three from Chrissy Cooper gave the Bulls a 27-24 lead going into the break.

The second half was all Kent State as the Golden Flashes outscored the Bulls 42-28 in final 20 minutes of action. UB was up 29-26 with 18:30 left in the half when Kent State went on a 12-2 run and never looked back. The Bulls would pull to within four with 6:13 left on a three from Cooper, but four straight Kent State points put it back up by eight. The closest UB got was within five on a layup from Smith with 3:12 left, but Kent State went 10-of-13 from the foul line down the stretch for the final margin of victory.

Brown recorded her 18th double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Brown now has 330 rebounds on the season, breaking the old school record of 323, which was set by Marie Bajko back during the 1981-82 season. Brown now has 737 rebounds for her career, eighth in school history. Brown's 17 points give her 518 for the season, second in school history and only behind her 532 points from a year ago. They also give her 1,268 for her career, just seven away from fifth place on UB's all-time scoring list.

Sophomore Brittany Hedderson finished with 14 points and five assists, while Cooper had nine points on a trio of three-pointers. Junior Bridgette Kendricks finished the evening with eight rebounds, two points and two assists.

Kent State was led by 25 points from Jamilah Humes and 20 points from Taisja Jones, who went 10-of-12 from the free throw line.

The Bulls will begin the 2010 MAC Tournament on Saturday as they head to Eastern Michigan for first round action. The Bulls enter the tournament as the #12 seed, while the Eagles have claimed the #5 seed. Tip off is at 2:00 pm.
