WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team rolled to an impressive 7-0 victory over Western New York rival Niagara on Friday evening at the Miller Tennis Center. The Bulls improve to 3-2 with the victory while the Purple Eagles slip to 2-5.
The Bulls scored the opening doubles point with 8-3 victories at the number two and three positions. Marcelo Mazzetto and George Tibilwon at number two while Mitch Zenaty and Vusa Hove teammed up for the first time at number three for win. The Bulls made a clean sweep of the doubles in the number one match as Wojciech Starakiewicz andKirill Kolomyts rallied from a 6-3 deficit to defeat Matthew Kane and Jeremy Quiroz, 8-6.
UB also swept all six singles matches. Starakiewicz, ranked sixth in the Northeast, started quickly against Quiroz in the number one match, scoring a 6-0 win in the first set. Starakiewicz needed to rally in the second set, forcing a tiebreaker, to pick up the win for the Bulls.
Kolomyts and Brandon Gallegos split their opening sets before Kolomyts staged an incredible rally in the super-tiebreaker to keep the shutout alive. With Gallegos leading the breaker, 4-2, Kolomyts won the next eight points for the 10-4 decision.
The remainder of the matches went to the Bulls in straight sets. Alex Kalinin picked up his team-leading 10th singles victory with his 6-3, 6-2 triumph over David Lemieux-Sarrasin at number five.
Although the Bulls scored a shutout win, many of the matches were close. "We had some tight matches at the top," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We were pushed but got through. Getting this win gives us confidence for Florida."
The Bulls begin their spring break trip in Florida against Florida Atlantic on Sunday, March 7. The Owls were Sun Belt Tournament runners-up in 2009. UB will also face Southern Illinois and Troy before returning to Buffalo to host Robert Morris on Thursday, March 11.
