Bulls Slip Against Penn State, 6-1

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team was handed its first loss of the dual meet season by Penn State, ranked 55th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Penn State University Center.
The lone win for the Bulls (2-1) was scored by senior Kirill Kolomyts. Kolomyts, playing at third singles, knocked off Penn State's Jason Lee in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The Bulls put up a strong fight against the Nittany Lions (5-1) with matches at first, second and fourth singles all going to the wire. At number one, UB's Wojciech Starakiewicz forced a second-set tiebreaker against Eddie Bourchier, but dropped a 7-5, 7-6 (4) decision. Marcelo Mazzetto and Alex Kalinin, at numbers two and four, respectively, fell in straight sets. Mazzetto lost to Ryan Gormley, 6-3, 6-4, while Kalinin fell to Bryan Weinetz, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play, Mazzetto and George Tibil forced a tiebreaker in the number two match. The pair were defeated in the tiebreaker, 7-3, by Gormley and Weinetz.
The match against the Nittany Lions was the first match against a Big Ten opponent.
"We lost to a good Penn State team today, who competed hard and we learned a lot," said head coach Lee Nickell. "I am happy with the way Kiril played in his victory, we are excited for the upcoming week of practice and our match against Cornell."
The Bulls travel to Cornell for a 9:00 am match next Saturday. UB will attempt to score a second victory over an Ivy League foe after the Bulls downed Brown, 4-3, on January 23.
