CANCUN, MEXICO – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team was unable to come away with a victory in its first ever regular season game in another country, falling to Michigan, 69-49. The loss drops UB's record to 2-3 on the season.
The Bulls led very early in the contest scoring four of the first six points of the game, but the Wolverines did a good job shutting down reigning MAC East Player of the Week Kourtney Brown, who finished with just six points. The Wolverines would get their first double-digit lead of the game with 6:46 left in the opening half and led by 11 when an 8-0 Buffalo run pulled the Bulls within 27-24. However, the Wolverines responded with a 7-0 run over the final three minutes of the half to take a 10-point lead into the half.
The Bulls would go on to cut the Michigan lead to seven on a fast break layup from Brown to cut the deficit to 41-34, but a quick 10-0 run by Michigan gave it a 17-point advantage. The Bulls would never get closer than 15 throughout the rest of the half.
Junior Brittany Hedderson led the way with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists as she was the lone UB player to scored double digits. Brown, senior Jessica Fortman and sophomore Nicki Hopkins each finished with six points, as Hopkins buried two late three pointers in the second half. Brown did have a team-high 10 rebounds, while adding two blocks and two steals. Freshmen Margeaux Gupilan and Kristen Sharkey each finished with four points. Hedderson and senior Ashley Zuber tied for a team-high three assists.
Michigan was led by 17 points from Veronica Hicks and 13 points and 11 rebounds from Sam Arnold.
The Bulls conclude play at the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic tomorrow at 5:00 pm eastern time as they face William & Mary. The Tribe lost a three-point decision to Bradley earlier today.
