BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo swimming and diving program is competing at the University of Akron's Zippy Invite this Thursday, December 4th, through Sunday, December 7th.
The Bulls return to Akron for the Zippy Invite for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The program finished third of six teams in attendance last season. The Zippy Invite will mark the first of two road trips to Akron this season for the Bulls, with the team set to return for Mid-American Conference Championships from February 25th through February 28th.
The program enters the midseason meet fresh off its own UB Invite. The Bulls competed against Canisius University and Niagara University in a two-day meet in the Alumni Arena Natatorium. The meet was not scored, but the Bulls won 12 of the 23 events.
"We were able to use the meet to have the girls swim events that they normally would not swim," said Head Coach Andy Bashor. "To see that and give them some excitement about trying different things is fun. We have our mid-season meet at Akron next, where the girls will compete in their best events, so the home meet was a good time and place to get out and get some good racing in."
Nicole Aguilar helped the Bulls to six of their 12 event wins at the UB Invite. The senior won the 50-yard backstroke (26.63), 50-yard butterfly (25.02) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.77). Aguilar was also a member of three winning relay teams, the 400-yard medley relay (3:43.52), 200-yard medley relay (1:42.44) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:24.82).
Bella Forsman continued her sophomore season success by winning two individual events and being a member of three winning relay teams for the Bulls. Forsman highlighted her weekend with a time of 54.93 to win the 100-yard butterfly, also taking the ninth spot in program history for the event. Forsman also won the 100-yard freestyle, posting the fastest time on the Buffalo roster this season (50.63).
Ava Pauly rose the program's all-time ranks for the second time this season, again in the 100-yard breaststroke, posting an event win and a time of 1:02.29. The sophomore's time moved to sixth on the program's all-time top 10. Pauly also opened the UB Invite by winning the 50-yard breaststroke with the fastest time on the Bulls' roster so far this season (28.88).
The Bulls' divers have been dominant through four meets, taking five or more of the top seven spots in each diving event. Through the eight events, the Buffalo divers have earned 49 of the top 56 spots.
Adele Melamud continues to have a historic freshman campaign, now the winner of six of the eight diving events the team has competed in. Melamud won both the one-meter (276.90) and the three-meter (288.15) at the UB Invite.
Maggie Meyers brought her best for the UB Invite too, setting a new personal record in the three-meter with a score of 287.55. The performance was a personal record for the junior, beating her previous best by 25 points. Meyers qualified for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships with the performance.
