
Bulls use Late Heroics to Top UMass and Win Inaugural Flagship Cup

AMHERST, MA – Ta'Quan Roberson found Victor Snow in the corner of the endzone for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds left to help the University at Buffalo football team rally past Massachusetts, 28-21, at McGuirk Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The victory gave the Bulls the first win in the new Flagship Cup rivalry series.
With the Bulls trailing, 21-20, and 41 seconds on the clock, the Bulls took over at midfield looking for the go-ahead score. Back-to-back completions to Jasaiah Gathings, including an acrobatic catch on the sideline, set the Bulls up at the UMass 16-yard line. One play later, Roberson hit Snow for the winning score.
After taking a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, the Bulls were playing from behind for much of the game. The Minutemen took a 14-3 lead with 4:12 left in the second quarter. Snow, who had two touchdowns in the game, scored his first late in the second quarter on a 23-yard reception, to cut the UMass lead to 14-10 at the half.
Buffalo took the lead, 17-14, on its first possession of the second half on a one-yard run by Terrance Shelton, Jr.
On UMass' next possession, a broken play resulted in a 77-yard touchdown pass to give the lead back to the Minutemen, 21-17.
Jack Howes, banked a 47-yard field goal off the right upright for his second field goal of the day to cut the UMass lead to 21-20.
Roberson tied a school record with 36 completions and threw for a career-best 403 yards – the most passing yards by a UB quarterback since Tyree Jackson thew for 406 against Bowling Green in 2017.
His favorite target was Nik McMillan who had career highs of 10 receptions for 119 yards. Snow also eclipsed 100 yards with eight grabs for 112 yards. Gathings had his best game as a Bull with six receptions for 84 yards.
Kobe Stewart led the defense with one of his finest performances. The redshirt-senior edge had a career-high 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks and three tackles for loss. Linebacker Red Murdock added nine tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.
The Bulls improved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in Mid-American Conference play. They will next host Akron next Saturday at UB Stadium.
