BUFFALO, N.Y. – University at Buffalo Diver Marialis Kwak has been named the NCAA Division I State University of New York Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. has announced. Kwak was selected from student-athletes previously recognized as SUNY Scholar Athletes in 29 different sports from the fall, winter, and spring athletic seasons. The award recognizes an outstanding student-athlete performance in the classroom and on the field of play.
Kwak, a junior chemical engineering major with a 3.69 overall GPA, was named the MAC Women's Diver of the Year, earned First-Team All-MAC honors, won gold in both the one-meter and three-meter events at MAC Championships and was an NCAA National Championship qualifier in both events. The junior also posted a career-best score in the one-meter dive of 313.00, a mark that ranks third in program history.
Individuals were nominated and voted upon by representatives of their respective institutions. Those put forward then had their academic and athletic achievements reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from across the SUNY system. The full list of honorees can be accessed here.
The SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards recognize outstanding academic and athletic success in 29 different sports and are presented three times a year to coincide with the specific sports contested in the fall, winter, and spring seasons. The overall Scholar Athletes of the Year in each individual sport are then announced in mid-July.
