BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo football team held its annual Blue & White game on Saturday afternoon at UB Stadium. Using a scoring format that allowed the defense to score points, the defense defeated the offense, 40-37, in a close game.
The offense was led by wide receiver Nik McMillan who had six catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He had a 34-yard grab and two 41-yard receptions, one of which went for a touchdown.
C.J. Ogbonna led the quarterbacks going 10-for-20 for 104 yards and a touchdown. Gunnar Gray completed 6-of-14 passes for 108 yards and a score. Richie Watts finished 5-for-8 for 61 yards.
The Bulls had a balanced attack on the ground. Mark-Anthony Scott, Jr. had five carries for 48 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown. Lamar Sperling had six carries for 42 yards. Messiah Burch, who redshirted a season ago as a wide receiver, showed off his speed as a running back, totally a game-high 55 yards on just six carries.
Redshirt-freshman quarterback Anthony Policare showed off his wheels as well with four carries for 31 yards and a touchdown.
Tight end Ryan Daly had four catches for 50 yards. Taji Johnson, a graduate transfer from Boston College, had three grabs for 34 yards. Jake Orlando and Micah Woods each added three receptions for the offense.
Redshirt-freshman kicker Nick Reed made good on three of four field goal attempts, connecting on 43, 35 and 42-yard field goals.
The defensive line was dominant in the game. Defensive tackles Junior Poyser and Daishon Folsom each had five tackles, including two tackles for loss. Kobe Stewart, a transfer from Samford, also had five tackles and added a TFL. Cornell Evans had a pair of sacks on the afternoon.
The defense also made plays on the back end. Redshirt-freshman safety Jayden Lewis had four tackles and an interception for the defense. Charles McCartherens added a one-handed pick in the endzone as well.
Newcomer Oliver Bridges, a cornerback transfer from Cincinnati, had seven tackles and two pass breakups. Fellow cornerback Amir Proctor also totaled seven tackles.
The spring game is the culmination of 15 allowable spring practices. The team will report back this summer in preparation for the season opener against Lafayette on August 29 at UB Stadium.
