BUFFALO, NY – The 2024 NFL Draft gets under way on Thursday night, and it marks 10 years since Khalil Mack made history for the University at Buffalo football program. The Raiders picked Mack fifth overall in the 2014 NFL Draft, making him the highest drafted player in UB Football history and the highest defensive player ever drafted from the Mid-American Conference.
Since that historic night at Radio City Music Hall a decade ago, Mack has proven he was the right choice. He has spent time with three teams over his career, the Raiders (2014-17), Bears (2018-21) and Chargers (2022-) and posted eye-popping numbers at each stop.
Mack is an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, five-time All-Pro pick, was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2016 and was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. In 2015, he became the first player in NFL history to be named first-team All-Pro at two different positions – defensive end and outside linebacker.
His stats back up the accolades. Mack has 591 career tackles, 101.5 sacks, 30 forced fumbles, 12 fumble recoveries, three interceptions and two defensive touchdowns. He ranks 38th in NFL history in career sacks.
And at age 33, Mack is showing no signs of slowing down. In a game against his former Raiders squad on October 1, 2023, he totaled a career-best six sacks - a Chargers' franchise record and one shy of the single-game NFL record.
Mack is no stranger to breaking records. A 2013 All-American, he still holds the UB record for career sacks (28.5), career tackles for loss (75) and career forced fumbles (16). In addition, he is the NCAA career record holder for both tackles for loss and forced fumbles.
Mack's stellar career with the Bulls resulted in him being picked fifth overall in the NFL Draft. When he decides to retire, his stellar career in the NFL will hopefully result in him being picked again – this time for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
