3/9/2024 4:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (17-12, 10-8 MAC) fell to Ball State 71-50 in the regular season finale on Senior Day at Alumni Arena.
With today's results, the Bulls clinched the fourth seed in next week's Mid-American Conference Tournament, held in Cleveland at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, where they will face fifth-seeded Bowling Green.
Redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson led the Bulls offensively with 16 points while freshman Kirsten Lewis-Williams also scored in double figures with 12 points. Fellow Freshman Alexis Davis was a menace on the glass, recording a new career-high 14 rebounds while senior Rana Elhusseini stuffed the stat sheet once again, recording eight points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
The Bulls struggled early as Ball State led 13-2 at the first media timeout and they would lead 21-6 at the end of the first. Lewis-Williams and Watson got going, scoring on two straight possessions early in the second quarter before Elhusseini drained a three from the wing to cut the lead to 29-13 at the media timeout, but the Cardinals closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 39-15 lead at the half.
Sophomore Hattie Ogden hit a corner triple early in the third quarter, but Ball State maintained a 44-18 lead at the six-minute mark. Lewis-Williams came up with a steal and hit Elhusseini who found Watson up ahead for a fastbreak layup to cut the lead to 49-22 at the media timeout. Lewis-Williams and Watson scored in the paint on three straight possessions and later, Paula Lopez grabbed a rebound and raced up court for a fastbreak layup to cap a 9-2 run and pull UB withing 18 at the end of the third.
Watson found Davis for a layup on UB's first possession of the fourth quarter, but it would be all Cardinals from there as they answered with a 12-2 run to go up 63-37 at the media timeout and that was enough to put the game out of reach.
The Bulls and Falcons will be the second quarterfinal game of the day on Wednesday, March 13 with tipoff coming at approximately 1:30pm. Stay tuned to ubbulls.com for updates and more information regarding the MAC Tournament. For tickets click here.
