MOUNT PLEASANT, MI – The University at Buffalo wrestling team was in search of its first ever win at Central Michigan on Sunday, but unfortunately came up short to the host Chippewas, 28-5.
The Bulls go their first win of the day by Tommy Maddox at 133. Maddox continued his hot streak of late. He earned his third straight win with a 9-2 decision over Vince Perez.
Sam Mitchell earned a 5-2 decision over Cameron Wood at 197. Mitchell was in control the entire match and improved 14-4 in duals and a perfect 6-0 in MAC duals on the season.
While the Chippewas won the other matches, it wasn't without a fight from the Bulls. Kaleb Burgess nearly pulled off a massive upset over eighth-ranked Corbyn Munson, the top-ranked 149-pounder in the MAC. Burgess just missed getting a reversal in the closing seconds in a 5-4 loss.
Jay Nivison also had a close loss at 174. Nivison lost 3-2 in overtime to Alex Cramer, the conference's top-ranked wrestler in that weight class.
"We wrestled well today," head coach John Stutzman said. "We are getting better at the right time. We battled hard and Central Michigan is a tough place to wrestle."
The Bulls will next wrestle at Ohio on February 24.
