ATHENS, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (11-8, 5-4 MAC) dominated the second half and five players scored in double figures as the Bulls picked up an 81-63 road win over the Ohio Bobcats at the Convocation Center on Wednesday night.
The Bulls got good minutes from several players as seven different players found the scoresheet on the night. Reigning MAC Player of the Week Chellia Watson turned in another stellar performance as she flirted with a triple-double, recording 27 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore Hattie Ogden scored 15 points while Sitota Gines set a new UB career-high with 11 points. The freshman duo of Kirsten Lewis-Williams and Alexis Davis also scored in double figures with 10 points each.
It was all Ohio in the early going as they led 12-4 lead at first media timeout. The Bulls responded with a 7-0 run of their own to cut the lead to one late in the quarter. Ohio hit a three on their final possession, but Gines answered with a tough layup in the paint as UB cut the lead to 15-14 at the end of the first.
Watson drove and dished to Lewis-Williams on the block for a layup to tie the game at 18 early in the second quarter but the Bobcats answered with a pair of threes to go up by six at the 6:13 mark. Buffalo continued to attack as Watson and Gines scored buckets in the paint before Lewis-Williams converted on a fastbreak and-one layup to put UB up 25-24 at the media timeout. The Bulls clamped down on defense as they held the Bobcats scoreless for four-plus minutes and the offense took advantage as Buffalo hit five of their next seven shots, including a pair of threes from Ogden, to go up 33-26 with just over two minutes remaining but Ohio scored on three of their last four possessions to cut the lead to four at the half.
The Bulls continued to heat up from deep as Ogden and Watson drilled a triple each before Gines blew by her defender for a layup to put UB up 43-37 early in the third quarter. Buffalo continued to get stops on defense and turned it into points on the other end as they used a 6-0 run in two minutes to extend their lead to 12 at the media timeout. Watson took her defender off the bounce and finished with a floater in the lane before Davis skied up for a tough offensive rebound putback and Watson scored on back-to-back paint touches to cap a 14-0 run and put UB up by 20 with three minutes remaining in the quarter and they would only continue to pour it on as they outscored Ohio 32-11 overall in the third quarter to go up by 25. The 32 points was the highest output by UB in a quarter this season.
Ohio opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 17 and force an early UB timeout but that would be as close as the Bobcats would get as the Bulls maintained a 20+ lead most of the remainder of the game.
Buffalo shot 52% from the field and excelled in almost every statistical category as they dominated the paint, scoring a season-best 54 points inside, while also outrebounding the Bobcats 43-37, and scoring 26 points off 18 Ohio miscues and 12 second chance points.
Up next, Buffalo returns to Western New York as they welcome Eastern Michigan to Alumni Arena on Saturday, February 3rd at 6pm.
