LAFAYETTE, LA – Trailing 31-7 in the third quarter, the University at Buffalo football team nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback at Louisiana on Saturday night, but ultimately lost to the host Ragin' Cajuns, 45-38, at Cajun Field.
The Bulls capitalized on Louisiana miscues to climb back into the contest. Jonathan Capo recovered a Louisiana muffed punt at its 18-yard line and five plays later, Ron Cook, Jr. scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns in the game, to cut the lead to, 31-13.
On the ensuing possession, freshman cornerback Charles McCartherens intercepted his second pass of the game to set up the Bulls in the red zone. Once again, Cook ran it in for the touchdown and suddenly the score was 31-21.
The Ragin' Cajuns seemed to retake control of the game, regaining a 21-point advantage midway through the fourth quarter. But the Bulls didn't flinch. Cole Snyder connected with Marlyn Johnson on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 4:32 left and then, after recovering an onside kick, Jacqez Barksdale punched it in to make the score 45-38 with 2:00 on the clock.
The defense came up with a timely three-and-out to force a punt and give the ball back to the Bulls with 1:24 on the clock. However, Louisiana was able to come up with a turnover in the final seconds to secure the victory.
Snyder threw for 197 yards and a touchdown for the Bulls. CJ Ogbonna saw the first significant action of his UB career at quarterback and did damage with his legs. The SEMO transfer rushed for 38 yards and scored his first touchdown as a Bull.
Buffalo rushed for a season-high 178 yards in the game, led by Mike Washington, Jr. who finished with 88 yards on 13 carries.
Cole Harrity led the receivers with six catches in the game.
The defense was led by Shaun Dolac who had a season-high 11 tackles and a tackle for loss. Fellow linebacker Joe Andreessen finished with nine tackles and a TFL of his own. Defensive end Max Michel made plays all over the field, totaling seven tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and two pass breakups.
Buffalo will next open Mid-American Conference play at Akron next Saturday.
