BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo athletics enjoyed a record-setting fundraising year, thanks to the continued generosity of supporters and friends of the program. During the 2023 fiscal year, the department raised over $4.3 million ($4,378,961.93) in cash collections – a department record for cash collections in a year.
Overall, the department raised $5,404,251.05 in total commitments for the 2023 fiscal year.
"I'm very appreciative of the generosity of our Athletic Department supporters," Vice President and Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt said. "They make a difference as it pertains to our strategic initiatives while continuing to enhance the student-athlete experience. I would be remised not to mention the hard work of our development team, staff and coaches along with Bull Sports Properties who played a key role in breaking these records. I look forward to building upon this philanthropic success in the 2024 fiscal year."
The increase in commitments can be attributed to the growth of the 1958 Society which provides critical resources for facility improvement and new facility construction, through major gifts and pledges of $25,000 or more. Recent achievements include installation of a new artificial turf playing surface at Nan Harvey Field, home of the UB softball team as well as the groundbreaking for the state-of-the-art Brittany Murchie Mulla Sports Performance Center – a 12,000-square-foot, multilevel facility that will serve as a training space for all UB student-athletes, scheduled to open in 2024.
The department recently closed out a campaign to enhance UB's student-athlete Academic Enrichment Center. Work on the center will begin in early 2024 and was also supported through 1958 Society commitments.
The department has enjoyed an across-the-board increase in giving at all levels and for the 2023 fiscal year, experienced a 6.5 percent increase in total donors year-over-year. Along with giving to the 1958 Society, supporters have donated to team-specific Excellence Funds, endowments and crowdfunding campaigns.
"We could not be more grateful for all the contributions we received from so many donors this year," Deputy Director of Athletics, External Operations Eric Gross said. "This new fundraising milestone is a wonderful testament to our coaches and student-athletes who, year-after-year, provide such a compelling case for support.
"Thank you to all who gave so generously to support the success of our student-athletes."
