BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo Division of Athletics achieved a perfect Athletic Equality Index (AEI) score of 100 over the past year, as announced by Athlete Ally.
UB is one of two Mid-American Conference schools to earn a perfect mark.
"We are honored to be recognized by Athlete Ally for our collective efforts to create an inclusive community within our department and campus," said Melanie Bliz, Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Enrichment. "We are excited to celebrate this moment and use the momentum to continue to promote education, awareness, and equity for all."
Launched in 2017, the AEI measures LGBTQ+ inclusion policies and practices in NCAA D-I athletic departments. The AEI provides a comprehensive, up-to-date snapshot of how D-I institutions are supporting their fans, staff, coaches, and student-athletes. The aims of the AEI are to: set a gold standard of LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices in collegiate athletics; provide feedback to athletic departments on how their policies and practices compare to others across the nation; and offer resources to departments hoping to update their policies and practices.
UB is committed to ensuring equal employment, educational opportunity, and equal access to services, programs, and activities without regard to an individual's race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, gender, pregnancy, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, predisposing genetic characteristics, marital status, veteran status, military status, domestic violence victim status, or ex-offender status. This includes, but is not limited to, recruitment, the application process, examination and testing, hiring, training, grading, disciplinary actions, rates of pay or other compensation, advancement, classification, transfer and reassignment, discharge, and all other terms and conditions of employment, educational status, and access to university programs and activities.
Athlete Ally is a national non-profit focused on educating individuals and institutions about the obstacles to inclusion for LGBTQI+ people and how they can build an inclusive culture through sport. Their mission is to educate and activate athletic communities to eliminate homophobia and transphobia in sports and to exercise their leadership to champion LGBTQI+ equality.
