Bulls Drop First MAC Dual of the Season at Northern Illinois, 15-14

DEKALB, IL – The University at Buffalo wrestling team lost their first Mid-American Conference dual of the season, falling at Northern Illinois, 15-14, at the Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls fell behind early, but nearly pulled off the comeback victory.
After dropping their first three matches and falling behind, 10-0, the Bulls began their rally with a 4-3 decision by Kaleb Burgess. The redshirt-freshman scored late to pull out the 4-3 decision over Anthony Cheloni.
Michael Petite also had to rally to win his match at 157. The Bulls' senior scored late in regulation to force OT and then got the takedown to earn the 9-7 sudden victory over Anthony Gibson.
After dropping their next match at 165, the Bulls strung together three straight wins to turn a 13-6 deficit into a 15-13 advantage.
Jay Nivison won his bout at 174, 3-1, in overtime over Hayden Pummel. It was Nivison's third straight sudden victory.
Giuseppe Hoose remained perfect in MAC duals with a 9-7 sudden victory of his own over Matt Zuber at 184.
Sam Mitchell earned a 2-0 decision over Jacob Christiansen at 197. Mitchell was able to ride out Christensen for the entire second period, proving to be the difference in the match.
Despite the valiant comeback, Northern Illinois was able to win the heavyweight match to eek out the one-point victory.
"What a great day of wrestling," head coach John Stutzman said. "We came out on the wrong end today, but the team showed a lot of fight. Even with the loss, these guys fought extremely hard. I'm proud of these guys and their effort."
The Bulls will be back in action at Clarion on Friday.
