BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team fought hard, but dropped a dual to Michigan State, 26-9, on Thursday night. The dual was held at the UB Center for the Arts in an event dubbed "Mayhem on the Mainstage." It marked the third time the wrestling team hosted a dual at the CFA.
The Bulls won three matches on the night, while losing three other matches by two points or less.
"We wrestled hard tonight," head coach John Stutzman said. "We were three takedowns away from it being a different result. But hats off to Michigan State. They are a good team."
Tommy Maddox earned the first points of the night for the Bulls with a 3-1 decision at 133. His three-point nearfall in the second period was the difference in the match.
The Bulls had a chance in the middle weights. Nick Stampoulos dropped a 6-4 decision at 149, Ty Raines dropped a 1-0 decision to 17th-ranked Chase Saldate at 157 and Jay Nivison lost in overtime at 174. That enable the Spartans to pull away.
Chase Kranitz was impressive at 184. The redshirt-freshman had two takedowns and a four-point nearfall in the first period to jump out to a 10-0 lead. He went on to win a 13-6 decision over Jacob Lee.
Sam Mitchell improved to 7-2 in duals on the season with an 8-3 decision over Kael Wisler at 197.
The Bulls are back in action on Sunday against another Big Ten opponent when they travel to 13th-ranked Rutgers.
