Bulls Split at Bucknell Duals, Improve to 2-0 in the MAC

LEWSIBURG, PA – The University at Buffalo wrestling team wrestling well on Sunday but had to settle for a split at the Bucknell Duals. The Bulls improved to 2-0 in Mid-American Conference duals with a decisive, 34-3, victory over Bloomsburg. In the opener, UB dropped an 18-17 dual to Bucknell. The dual actually ended, 17-17, but the Bison won on criteria, by having one more match point than the Bulls, 64-63.
The Bulls completely dominated Bloomsburg, winning nine of the ten matches.
Max Elton set the tone with a14-3 major decision over Bronson Garber at 125. It was the first of four straight bonus points earned by the Bulls.
Tommy Maddox won by tech fall over Major Lewis, 20-5, in the 133 bout. Caleb Brooks earned a 9-0 major decision over Nick Antonelli at 141 and Kaleb Burgess followed with a major of his own, cruising past Cade Balestrini, 15-2.
Ty Raines won by decision, 5-1, over William Morrow at 157. Marcus Petiite earned the Bulls second tech fall of the day with a 20-4 win over Josh Bonomo at 174.
UB closed out the win with three straight decisions by Chase Kranitz, Sam Mitchell and Robbie Unruh.
The Bulls dropped a close dual to Bucknell in the opener.
Elton opened the dual with a 6-1 decision over Grayson McClellan. The Bulls dropped the next two matches to fall behind, 6-3. However, Nick Stampoulos won by major decision, 20-10, over Aiden Davis, to put the Bulls back on top, 7-6.
Raines extended the UB lead to 10-6 with a 7-4 decision over Nick Delp.
Bucknell won the next two duals to go up 12-10 on the Bulls.
Kranitz earned a major decision over Nolan Springer at 184 to give the lead back to the Bulls, 14-12. Mitchell followed with a 5-0 decision over Logan Deacetis at 197 to extend the UB advantage to five heading into the final match.
However, the Bulls gave up a tech fall in the final match to tie things up at 17-17. With the dual tied, it went to criteria and the Bison won because they had an edge in total match points, 64-63.
"We wrestled well today," head coach John Stutzman said. "Starting 2-0 in the MAC is important.
The Bulls will next compete at the Ken Kraft Midlands beginning Dec. 29.
