BUFFALO, NY - With the NFL season kicking off on Thursday night, 12 former University at Buffalo football players find themselves on NFL rosters. Khalil Mack is with the Chargers, Cam Lewis is with the Bills and Malcolm Koonce is with the Raiders. In addition, players on NFL practice squads include Steven Means (Ravens), Demone Harris (Texans), Mason Schreck (Texans), Jaret Patterson (Commanders), Ja'Marcus Ingram (Bills) and Kayode Awosika (Eagles). Tyree Jackson is on Philadelphia's reserve/PUP list.
Mack continues to be one of the most dominant defensive players in the NFL. In the offseason, he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, his third NFL Team. He previously spent four seasons with the Bears and four seasons with the Raiders. Over his eight-year career, Mack has been a six-time Pro Bowl selection and was the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Lewis begins his fourth season with the Bills, but his first on the opening day 53-man roster. Throughout his career, the cornerback has spent time on both the practice squad and active roster. He has played in 12 games over his career, making three starts.
Koonce is in his second season with the Raiders after the team selected him in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he appeared in five games and had three tackles, two tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.
In addition to three players on active rosters, the Bulls also have numerous former players on NFL practice squads.
Steven Means is the longest tenured Bull currently in the NFL. He signed this offseason with the Ravens and was assigned to their practice squad. His 10th year in the league, Means also played for the Buccaneers, Eagles and Falcons. He was Atlanta's nominees for NFL Man of the Year in 2020.
Tight end Mason Schreck is in his sixth season in the NFL, signing with the Texans in the offseason. He joins former UB teammate Demone Harris who also signed with Houston in the offseason. It will be Harris' fifth year in the league.
Running back Jaret Patterson had a solid rookie season with the Washington Commanders, rushing for 286 yards and two touchdowns in 2021. He was signed to the team's practice squad for his second season.
The Eagles have a pair of Bulls on their roster. Offensive lineman Kayode Awosika is in his second season on the team's practice squad. Former quarterback Tyree Jackson reinvented himself as a tight end, making Philadelphia's 53-man roster a season ago. However, after suffering an injury late in the season, he will start this year on the team's PUP list.
Ingram is the newest Bull to make an NFL roster. The cornerback was recently signed to the Bills' practice squad.
In addition, wide receiver K.J. Osborn and tight end Tyler Mabry, who both graduated from UB, but played the final season of their careers at other schools, are in their third seasons with the Vikings and Seahawks, respectively. Osborn is on the active roster after a solid sophomore campaign in Minnesota. He had 50 catches for 655 yards and seven touchdowns in 2021. Mabry is on Seattle's practice squad.
