BUFFALO, NY – Head coach Jim Whitesell has announced the signing of Sy Chatman, who will join the Bulls for the 2022-23 season. Chatman comes to UB after playing the last two seasons at Illinois State.
A 6-8 forward, Chatman hails from Minneapolis, MN and played at Cretin-Derham Hall, the same high school as current Bull Curtis Jones.
Chatman played in 20 games last season, starting 18, before suffering a season-ending injury. He averaged 13.5 points per game, second on the team, while leading the Cardinals at 6.1 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 29 points and 13 rebounds against Eastern Michigan, and he added 21 points against Buffalo in UB's win over Illinois State at the Cancun Challenge. He scored 22 points and had seven rebounds at Wisconsin and scored 23 points against Valparaiso.
He played in five games in 2020-21 before opting out of the season and prior to that spent two seasons at UMass, playing in 35 games for the Minutemen. He scored 16 points at Rutgers on Nov. 29 and added seven points with seven rebounds against South Carolina on Dec. 4, while recording 10 points and adding five rebounds at Harvard on Dec. 7. As a freshman with the Minutemen, he played in 29 games with four starts. He averaged 3.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game, making 52 percent of his field goal tries. His season-high came on Nov. 9 against New Hampshire with 10 points, while scoring nine points against Howard on Nov. 13. He pulled down a season-high six rebounds at Temple on Dec. 12, and blocked two shots six different times throughout the season.
Before heading to UMass, he averaged 17.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game for St. Paul's Cretin-Durham Hall, helping Cretin-Durham Hall to a Minnesota state title while earning Associated Press All-Minnesota Third-Team honors. Chatman was also named to All-Minnesota State Tournament Team.
"Sy is an extremely physical post player who can create scoring opportunities from multiple areas of the floor," said Whitesell. "He will bring a veteran presence to our program and after having such a hard time guarding him in Cancun in November, we are happy he's now on our side!"
Chatman joins a big incoming class that includes fellow transfers Armani Foster, Isaiah Adams, Yazid Powell, and Kanye Jones, as well as freshmen Isaac Jack and Devin Ceaser.
