BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo head women's basketball coach Becky Burke has announced the addition of Re'Shawna Stone, who comes to Buffalo from Glenville State.
Stone was named the Division II National Player of the Year after leading the Pioneers to a 35-1 overall record and a national championship. She finished her stellar four-year career with 1,963 career points. Stone also earned First Team All-American and Mountain East Conference and Atlantic Region Player of the Year honors after averaging 16.8 points in just under 23 minutes per game and led the team in assists (103), steals (76), and three-pointers made (68) as a senior. She scored in double figures 30 times this season, 24 times with 20 or more points and scored a career-high 31 points in a win at West Liberty.
Stone averaged just under 17 points in addition to 3.9 rebounds per game in a Covid-shortened 2020-21 season, scoring in double figures in all but three games, while also leading the team with 53 steals and 35 steals. As a sophomore, Stone started all 31 games and was a D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Second Team and All-MEC First Team selection after averaging 16.8 points while adding 4.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game. She scored in double figures in all but four games, including score 20+ points 12 times and eclipsing the 1,000-point mark in just 57 games, while also leading the Pioneers in assists (87) and steals (55). Stone made an immediate impact as a freshman as she earned MEC Freshman of the Year honors after helping to lead the Pioneers to a MEC regular season championship, MEC Tournament Championship and the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship. She started 32 of 33 games, finishing second on the team with 17.2 points per game, including scoring in double figures in all but three games and eclipsing the 20-point mark 12 times, to go with 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game. She was named the MEC Tournament MVP after averaging 19.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in the tournament.
A native of Waynesville, MO, Stone competed at Waynesville High School where she was an All-State Team and multiple First Team All-Ozark Conference selection while also earning Class 5 All District honors, scoring over 1,500 points in her career as a Tiger. In August of 2018, Missouri State Representative Steve Lynch presented Stone with a Missouri House of Representatives Resolution.
Burke on Stone: "Re'Shawna was the best player in the country at the Division II level and I fully expect that to translate to her being one of the best players in the country at this level as well. She is a dynamic scorer at all three levels and takes great pride guarding on the defensive end of the floor. Her experience winning a national championship and her winning habits will be a tremendous asset in our locker room. We are very lucky to have Re'Shawna join our team."
Stone joins Latrice Perkins and Chellia Watson as the third commit to join UB in the Burke era.
