CLEVELAND, OH – Ronaldo Segu's three-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the rim and the University at Buffalo men's basketball team dropped a nailbiter to Akron, 70-68, in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. The Bulls rallied back from a double-digit second-half deficit to take a late lead but couldn't hold on for the victory.
Akron got hot from beyond the arc midway through the second half to take a 57-47 lead. However, behind the efforts of mostly bench players, the Bulls mounted a furious comeback. Tra'Von Fagan scored seven of UB's next nine points to quickly cut the deficit to four. Fellow reserve Keishawn Brewton hit a corner three and drew the foul to cut the deficit to one and then following an Akron basket, hit another three-pointer to tie the game, 62-62, with 4:28 left.
Curtis Jones and LaQuill Hardnett stepped up on the defensive end to give the Bulls opportunities to take the lead and they finally did when Fagen drained a three-pointer to put the Bulls ahead, 65-62.
Jeenathan Williams got a steal and layup to give the Bulls a 67-64 lead with 1:26 remaining. After a pair of Akron free throws, a free throw by Jones gave UB a 68-66 advantage with 1:06 left.
Akron scored the next four points, including a pair of free throws with 4.3 seconds left to take a 70-68 lead. Segu then raced down the court and got a clean look at a three-pointer, as time expired, but it was just off the mark allowing the Zips to escape with the victory.
Williams led the Bulls with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Fagan added 12 points, five rebounds, a block and two steals in only 18 minutes. Maceo Jack also reached double-figures with 11 points. David Skogman had an efficient game with nine points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes of action.
