BUFFALO, NY – Blue Collar U, the University at Buffalo men's basketball alumni team, completed their run in the TBT on Sunday afternoon, winning four games in the tournament before falling in the semifinals.
After rolling through the Columbus Region this past week, winning three games, Blue Collar U was officially the Columbus Region champions following an 84-81 win over The Money Team in the quarterfinals on Saturday evening.
Nick Perkins led the way with 23 points and 11 rebounds, including the game-winning put back tip in to complete one of the most competitive Elam Endings in the entire tournament. Blake Hamilton added 18 points, while CJ Massinburg had 10 as did Lamonte Bearden.
On Sunday afternoon, Blue Collar U met up against Team 23 and the contest was tight throughout until a strong fourth quarter from Team 23 put the game away. Blue Collar U trailed by just three at the end of the third quarter, but Team 23 built their lead up to 14 just four minutes into the fourth.
"This opportunity was unbelievable and like I said before I never thought I was going to have the opportunity to play with these guys again," said Massinburg, UB's second all-time leading scorer. "To make this amazing run, the 12 guys in the locker room, the coaching staff, Wes [Scheier], everybody was just unbelievable."
Bearden led all scorers with 22 points against Team 23, while Perkins added 12.
"We don't take this experience for granted," Massinburg added. "We've all been on different pro teams, but the comradery and the brotherhood is like nothing we've felt during this run. I love my boys and we will be back next year."
