COLUMBUS, OH – Blue Collar U, the University at Buffalo men's basketball alumni team playing in the TBT, is halfway home as the squad won all three of their games in the Columbus Regional, advancing to the Elite Eight, which will be played beginning this weekend in Dayton.
What has served as a bit of a revenge tour for former Bulls such as CJ Massinburg and Nick Perkins, Blue Collar U has beaten alumni teams from Xavier and Miami (FL), both schools that defeated the Bulls over the course their careers.
Blue Collar U, who entered the 64-team TBT as a #6 seed in the Columbus Regional, opened the weekend on Saturday with an 88-82 win over The Nerd Team. They followed that up on Sunday evening, defeating #3 Zip Em Up, 93-83, and on Tuesday evening Blue Collar U advanced to the Elite Eight with a 78-61 win over Category 5.
It's been a balanced offense for Blue Collar U, who is averaging 86.3 points per game. Wes Clark leads the squad at 15.0 points per game, followed by Massinburg (13.3) and Perkins (10.3). Jeremy Harris, who hit the Elam Ending winner on Tuesday night, adds 10.3 points per game.
"Just like we've been doing all tournament, we've been playing unselfish, playing together as a team and as long as we keep playing together throughout, we are going to be alright," said Harris following Tuesday night's game.
As was the case when these players wore the Blue and White for UB, this group continues to share the basketball as 11 different players have found the scoring column during the first three games. Lamonte Bearden has chipped in 8.0 points per game, while "Big Shot" Blake Hamilton, who sent the Bulls to the NCAA Tournament in 2015-16 with a game-winner in the MAC Championship, is averaging 7.0 points per game.
Three Blue Collar U players are averaging 6.0 points per game, including former MAC Defensive Player of the Year Davonta Jordan and fellow 2020 graduate Antwain Johnson. Blue Collar U has also gotten a boost off the bench from former 1,000-point scorer Edric Dennis Jr., a childhood friend of Massinburg in Dallas, TX, who joined the squad.
Montel McRae and Dontay Caruthers, another MAC Defensive Player of the Year, have also had strong tournaments, including seven and five points, respectively on Tuesday night.
Six of the eight teams have already clinched their spots in Dayton with the final two claiming their spots on Wednesday night in the Illinois Regional.
Blue Collar U will face The Money Team on Saturday night at 9pm in the last game of the four quarterfinals. Final Four games will take place on Sunday afternoon and the TBT Championship game will be held at the UD Arena on Tuesday, August 3.
