BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team took 15th-ranked Pittsburgh to the wire before falling to the Panthers, 21-12, in front of a raucous crowd at Alumni Arena on Friday night. The Bulls fell behind 15-6 before rallying to within 15-12 with one match remaining.
The Panthers won the first two matches, including a tight battle at 133 where #5 Micky Phillippi earned a 4-2 decision over #21 Derek Spann.
The Bulls quickly tied things up thanks to Ben Freeman and John Arceri. At 141, Freeman got a takedown in overtime to earn the 6-4 sudden victory over Ryan Michaels. Arceri followed with a 4-1 decision over Dan Mancini at 149.
The Panthers won the next three matches to take a 15-6 advantage before the Bulls mounted a comeback.
At 184, Pete Acciardi won a thriller over James Lledo. With the match tied, 1-1, after overtime, it looked like Lledo was going to eke out a win after getting an escape in the second overtime.
However, Acciardi was able to get a reversal and ride out Lledo in the third overtime to pull out the 3-2 victory.
Sam Mitchell followed at 197 with a 4-2 decision over Geoff Magin. After allowing an early takedown, Mitchell got an escape in the first and an escape in the second to tie things up. A stall point and riding time gave the redshirt-sophomore the 4-2 win and pulled the Bulls to within three with one match to go.
Unfortunately for the Bulls, Jake Slinger was about to get the fall in the heavyweight match to give the win to the Panthers.
"I think we are close to being really good," head coach John Stutzman said. "Big Pete came up with a big win at 84. We've got a lot to get excited about. I like this team a lot. They are good kids."
After competing at the Journeymen Round Robin on Sunday, the Bulls will be back in action against #5 Michigan on November 21.
