MADISON, WI – The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped their season opener to 23rd-ranked Wisconsin, 30-3, at the UW Field House on Monday night. It was a tough test for a young UB squad facing a lineup that featured five wrestlers in the national rankings.
Tristan Daugherty started things off against #11 Eric Barnett and held his own. The Bulls' sophomore dropped a close 4-2 decision.
Derek Spann, back wrestling at 133, tied up the match with an 8-4 decision over Ethan Rotondo. It was Spann's 40 career dual win, moving him into ninth program history in career wins.
Unfortunately for the Bulls, that would be their only win as a deep, experienced Badger squad pulled away for the victory.
"Tough one out of the shoot, but I schedule like this for a reason," head coach John Stutzman said, "I was happy for Spann to get that win. Wisconsin is a good team with two All-Americans and a world champ in the lineup."
Buffalo is back in action at the Clarion Open on Sunday.
