
Bulls Take Two of Three at SIU-Edwardsville Quad

EDWARDSVILLE, IL – After not competing for 28 days, the University at Buffalo wrestling team was back in action on Saturday at a quad dual hosted by SIU-Edwardsville. The Bulls competed against the host Cougars as well as Northern Illinois and Clarion.
The Bulls won two out of the three duals. They beat SIU-Edwardsville, 19-15, and Clarion, 29-7. UB dropped a 30-6 decision to Northern Illinois for its first loss of the season.
"With the long layoff I'm happy to go 2-1 this weekend," head coach John Stutzman said. "For many this was the first round trip of their careers. I am excited for these guys to continue to improve. I'm looking forward to next weekend."
Buffalo 19 SIU-Edwardsville 15
The Bulls rallied to defeat SIU-Edwardsville, 19-15, in the first dual of the day. Tristan Daugherty got the Bulls off to a good start with an 11-4 major decision over Austin Macias. The Cougars needed to forfeit the 133 bout and the Bulls jumped out to a 10-0 lead.
However, SIUE would win earn decisions in the next three duals to cut the UB advantage to 10-9. Noah Grover, earned an overtime win at 165 to stop the Cougars' run. The redshirt-junior got an early takedown in the overtime period to earn the 3-1 win.
The Bulls dropped the next two bouts and suddenly found themselves trailing, 15-13, heading into the final two matches.
Sam Mitchell put on a dominant performance in the 197 match, shutting out Austin Andres, 6-0, to give the lead back to UB, 16-15.
Sam Schuyler slammed the door on the Cougars with a 4-1 decision over Aric Bohn in the heavyweight match.

The Bulls' second win came against Clarion in their third dual of the day. UB won its first six matches and never looked back.
Tristan Daugherty (125), Tommy Maddox (133), Derek Spann (141) and Ben Freeman (149) all earned decisions to give the Bulls a 12-0 lead. Michael Pettite earned a 14-4 major decision over Tate Ortz at 157 to extend the UB lead to 16-0.
Freshman Giuseppe Hoose earned his first collegiate win with an 8-4 decision over Max Wohlenbaugh in the 184 match. Sam Mitchell followed with his first career pin, earning the fall over Brett Wittmann early in the third period. Cahill closed out the win with a 10-1 major decision over Jackson Talbott.

The Bulls got off to a promising start against Northern Illinois, winning two of the first three matches, but struggled the rest of the way. Daugherty, the only Bull to win all three of his matches on the day, earned a 6-4 decision over Lucian Brink in the 125 bout. Spann earned the Bulls' other win of the dual with a 7-0 decision over Caleb Brooks at 141.
